MicroByte Adventure Gaming Guide

This document was created on 30/12/24 by James Jacobs of Amigan Software. If you have anything to contribute, please email us.

This page is part of Emerson Arcadia 2001 Central. Emulators, ROMs, manuals and other resources can be found there.

To play this game using Ami/WinBINBUG:

1. Choose "Options|Machine|BINBUG" (or press Ctrl+5).
2. Select BINBUG 6.1 from the "Options|BIOS" submenu.
3. Select VHSDOS from the "Options|DOS" submenu.
4. Choose "File|Reinitialize machine".
5. Choose "File|Open...".
6. Select "Adventure.raw".
7. Click OK.
8. Type K and press ENTER.
9. Type ADVENT and press ENTER.

The dumped disk is installed for VHSDOS and has one saved game (GAME1.ADV). Note that loading the VHSDOS version under MicroDOS will corrupt the disk! Specifically, the free block list will be corrupted and therefore you will not be able to save the game (as not enough free space will be found) on such a disk. If you want to play it under MicroDOS, you must reinstall it for MicroDOS (by running the INSTALL program).

The INSTALL program does the following:

Disk byte Action
$B16 Sets this according to the number of rows ($10=16 rows, $18=24 rows). This is part of the game (ADVENT.CMD).
$B17 Sets this according to the target platform ($00=VHSDOS, $01=MicroDOS). This is part of the game (ADVENT.CMD).
$3D..$3F Sets the date stamp of the game (ADVENT.CMD) to the current date. This is done by DOS, and is a side effect of writing to ADVENT.CMD.
$3301 Sets the next sector field of track 5, sector 2 to 3 (from 10). This is done by DOS, and is a side effect of writing to ADVENT.CMD.

The vocabulary is:

NUGGET, GOLD, SILVER, BARS, JEWELERY, COINS, DIAMONDS, VASE, PEARL, EGGS, NEST, TRIDENT, EMERALD, PYRAMID, CHAIN, SPICES, RUG, CHEST, LAMP, LANTERN, KEYS, FOOD, BOTTLE, CAGE, ROD, CLAM, MAGAZINE, BEAR, BLADE, PILLOW, POTTERY, SHARDS, OYSTER, BIRD, TROLL, DRAGON, SNAKE, DWARF, GRATE, BRIDGE, STREAM, STUFFED, FUCKED, AXE, ALL, EVERYTHIng, HILL, DOOR, GO, WALK, RUN, MOVE, CRAWL, FORWARD, CONTINUE, BACK, RETREAT, DESCRIBE, LOOK, L, EXAMINE, GET, CARRY, TAKE, PICKUP, DROP, FILL, LIGHT, OPEN, OIL, CATCH, THROW, ATTACK, KILL, FEED, WATER, UNLOCK, FREE, RELEASE, WAVE, XYZZY, PLOVER, PLUGH, CROSS, CLIMB, JUMP, EMPTY, LOCK, CLOSE, EAT, DRINK, KUNGFOO, LOAD, SAVE, INVENT, INVENTORy, I, SCORE, QUIT, INFO, HELP, BUILDING, HOUSE, DEPRESS, NORTH, N, SOUTH, S, EAST, E, WEST, W, UP, U, DOWN, D, DOWNWARD, NORTHEAST, NE, NORTHWEST, NW, SOUTHEAST, SE, SOUTHWEST, SW, ENTER, INTO, IN, OUT, OUTSIDE, EXIT, LEAVE, FOLLOW.

Apparent bugs:

You can GET the NUGGET but there is no way to leave the nugget room with it (including by using any of the magic words).
It does not appear possible to GET the COIN, DIAMONDS nor JEWELERY.
If the vase ($1E7A) and/or chain ($1E80) are in a room, it can cause some items (including but not limited to themselves) to not be listed as being in that room. Eg. try POKE $1E4F $06 (to teleport to the house), then FILL $1E75 $1E83 $06 (to teleport all treasures to the house), then LOOK.
You can FILL BOTTLE with WATER anywhere, not just near water sources. (You can only FILL BOTTLE with OIL at $08 (slit) and $30 (east pit).)

There are 250 points and 100 locations in this version.
Here is a map and (partial) walkthrough, based on confirmed 2650 version behaviour.
(N) means a hint offer (which you should decline if you want to maximize your score).

Suggested actions at start of game:

N, W.
ENTER HOUSE, GET ALL, EXIT HOUSE.
S, S.
FILL BOTTLE, OIL, FILL LAMP, FILL BOTTLE, OIL.
S.
UNLOCK GRATE.
DROP KEYS if you want.
OPEN GRATE.
D, W.
GET CAGE.
W.
LIGHT LAMP
W, W.
(N).

Most treasures are straightforward (even the emerald); here are some exceptions:

For the bars:

Get the CAGE (from $0B) if you don't have it already.
Go to the bird chamber ($0E).
If you are carrying the rod, DROP ROD.
CATCH BIRD.
W, D, D.
FREE BIRD.
DROP CAGE if you want.
N.
GET BARS
N
PLUGH, DROP BARS.

For the nest:

Go to the giant room ($46).
KUNGFOO.
GET NEST.
E, E, SE, NE, W, U, E, E, E.
XYZZY, DROP NEST.

For the chain:

Get the FOOD and KEYS (from $06) if you don't have them already.
Go to the barren room ($44).
(N), FEED BEAR, UNLOCK CHAIN.
DROP KEYS if you want.
GET CHAIN.
W, N, SW, S, W, W, S, U, E, E, E.
XYZZY, DROP CHAIN.

For the rug:

Go to the N-E canyon ($51).
GET RUG, KILL DRAGON, YES.
E, E, E, N, N, PLUGH, DROP RUG.

You may have to give KILL DRAGON and YES multiple times to kill the dragon. Sometimes the dragon will kill you instead. It is not known what causes this.

For the pearl:

Get the TRIDENT (from $49) if you don't have it already.
Go to the shell room ($27).
OPEN CLAM.
D, D.
GET PEARL.
U, U, S, W, W, U, E, E, E.
XYZZY, DROP PEARL, DROP TRIDENT.

For the vase:

Go to the oriental room ($33).
GET VASE.
SE, E.
GET PILLOW.
W, NW, N, W, W, W.
PLOVER, PLUGH, DROP PILLOW, DROP VASE.

If you see a dwarf, KILL DWARF.

To grow a beanstalk, enabling CLIMBing from $31 to $4B (unimportant):

Get the BOTTLE (from $06) if you don't have it already.
EMPTY BOTTLE (or FILL LAMP) if the bottle has oil in it.
Go to the west pit ($31).
FILL BOTTLE, WATER, WATER.
FILL BOTTLE, WATER, WATER.

To create a bridge, enabling CROSSing BRIDGE from $12 to $13 and vice versa (unimportant):

Get the ROD (from $0C) if you don't have it already.
Go to the east fissure ($12) or west fissure ($13).
WAVE ROD.

Here is an incomplete scoring table:

-5 points per hint accepted.
+5 points per treasure dropped in house * 15 treasures = +75 points total. Treasures are: nugget, bars, jewelery, coins, diamonds, vase, pearl, nest, trident, emerald, pyramid, chain, spices, rug, chest.
+10 points for discovering $07 (valley).
+20 points for discovering $0D (awkward).

It seems that merely teleporting all 15 treasures to the house is not enough to trigger the endgame. (INFO command says: "If you think that you've found all the treasures, just keep exploring for a while. If nothing interesting happens, you haven't found them all yet.") So there are apparently other flags (probably related to "finding" treasures) which are also important for triggering this.

Here are the travel tables/maps. They are formatted according to the outbound direction, as follows:

Yellow are wilderness.
Cyan are 1st level.
Purple are 2nd level.
Green and blue are 3rd level.
Dark red are maze, 3 steps from an exit.
Light red are maze, 2 steps from an exit.
Orange are maze, 1 step from an exit.
Eg. to escape from room $63, you could go N (light red) (to $62), then N (orange) (to $57), then N (purple) (to $14).
Light grey are moves to the same location (ie. in a circle, effectively not moving at all).
Dark grey are disallowed moves.

The table is correct even though it might appear not to be :-/

Some other flags:
$1E32: whether the lamp is lit ($00=no, $01=yes).
$1E33: oil level in the lamp ($40=full, although it can be edited to be higher than this).
$1E34: grate status ($00=locked, $01=unlocked but closed, $02=unlocked and open).
$1E35: bottle contents ($00=empty, $01=water, $02=oil).
$1E4B: percentage explored

The oil will not get depleted in the wilderness and in some rooms on the 1st level (ie. where it is not needed), even if the lamp is lit. It does not appear possible to actually extinguish the lamp once it has been lit (except by zeroing $1E32 in the debugger).
Zeroing $16EF (eg. "E 16EF 0" in the Ami/WinBINBUG debugger) will prevent the oil from being depleted at all (ie. you will never have to refill it).
