EMERSON ARCADIA 2001 GAMING GUIDE

This document was created on 17/8/02, and last updated on 5/8/23, by James Jacobs of Amigan Software. This is an exhaustive list of all 58 known non-homebrew programs for this console family, plus useful retrogaming information. Please email us with any corrections and additions to this document.

This page is part of Emerson Arcadia 2001 Central . Emulators, ROMs, manuals and other resources can be found there.

The term "Emerson Arcadia 2001" as used herein refers to this entire console family. There are many members of this console family, but all may be classified into three groups: the "Emerson" group, the "MPT-03" group and the "Palladium" (VCG) group. There are minor differences between these groups which can prevent some programs from running correctly on members of other groups (eg. Emerson group apparently lacks support for >8K ROMs).

Fun for all the family
"Despite the title, 3D Bowling has two-dimensional graphics. However, it does employ a pseudo-3D effect similar to Basketball for the Atari 2600. When the game begins, players are shown an angled/ overhead view of the pins (which look like plus signs and simply flatten when knocked over) at the top of the screen and a side-view of the bowler on the lower half of the screen. Lining up the bowler involves moving him up and down, which is how it's done in PBA Bowling for the Intellivision. The bowler is very nicely animated, and the ball is even shown rolling back to him after each throw. The ball has a natural curve to the left (imitating the roll of an accomplished right-handed bowler), but players can push the keypad buttons to hook the ball right or left." - Brett Weiss.

Alien Invaders One player game (uses left side controller)
Object is to destroy invaders descending on your city
You have 6 missiles and 5 minutes to play
Game speeds up as time goes on
You can fire from left or right side
High score remains on screen so next player can compare score
You can hide behind your castles
Exciting sound effects and colour
Fun for all the family
Seventy space invaders are fast on their way towards your city. And you can be sure they're not dropping in for afternoon tea!
You have just five minutes of accelerated computer time to blast the nasties and save your city from certain destruction.
There are three fortresses, behind which your missiles are safe.
But watch out! These invaders are smart!
If you hide too long, they'll bombard the castle walls. So keep moving around or the evil space critters will get you. And we wouldn't wish that on anyone!
"Like Alien Invaders - Plus! for the Odyssey2 and Astro Battle for the Astrocade, Alien Invaders for the Arcadia 2001 is a Space Invaders clone that makes the error of having an actual game ending. Players are given five minutes of accelerated computer time (approximately three minutes of real time) to destroy a mothership and 70 steadily descending yellow, red, green and black invaders, which comprise a grouping of 14 aliens wide by five aliens tall. As the rows descend, several blocky building positioned between the enemies and the player's ship shrink, giving the game an interesting graphical effect. Positioned just above the player's ship is a row of three defensive castles that lose a block each time they are hit by friendly or enemy fire. If the player hides behind a castle too long, invaders will bombard that castle." - Brett Weiss.
American Football Two player game (uses both controllers)
Two controller overlays guide players
National anthem song opens game
Realistic kickoff and runback
Any and all of the 11 players on each side can be moved
Offensive player selects his play. Run-Pass-Field Goal (2nd screen appears)
Defence can move any or all players to stop offense
"Offside" penalty is called
Interceptions are possible
A portion of field is always in view for most realistic action
The "roar of the crowd" makes this a most realistic game of skill
Send out "Decoy Receiver" to fool the defence
Fun for all the family
"The title screen for American Football gives an isometric view of the field, but, when the action actually begins, the viewpoint switches to overhead, with 11 small stick figure players on each team. The field scrolls horizontally and is 100 "yards" in length. On offense and on defence, the gridiron goliaths move in unison when the player pushes the control disc. By using the keypad, gamers can move line backers, safeties, receivers (including decoys) and the quarterback individually. The keypad is also used for snaps, kicks (including field goals), punts, runs and passes. Fumbles, off-sides, downs, huddles and safeties are also part of the action. After the button is pushed, a truncated, off-key rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" plays. Annoying crowd noise is heard throughout the game." - Brett Weiss.

Astro Invader "Astro Invader is a translation of the Stern arcade game. It was originally released in Japan in 1979 with the title "Kamikaze". The Leijac Corporation (later known as Konami) licensed it to Stern in 1980 and Astro Invader became the company's first release. Brian Miller set the official arcade world record at 39,880 in 1983.

In Astro Invader, Earth has gotten in trouble and once again you're its only hope (that crazy planet). This time around you've got to deal with suicidal aliens who attack you by killing themselves. Plus, there's the saucers that menacingly descend downwards and the mother ship that you never fight. However, if you're thinking that this is going to be a cakewalk then you'd be very wrong. Those crazy invaders are going to give you a couple of migraines before it's all said and done.

The game is set in some kind of galactic arena where the top half of the screen is a network of columns that the alien invaders fill up before they attack. The mother ship sends out the aliens at a progressively faster pace the longer the battle lasts. When the aliens fall, they use their patented "splat" attack to destroy you. While they prove deadly if you're near them when they make impact, the real threat are the saucers. Regardless of where you are on the screen, if the saucer reaches the bottom then you're done.

You may be wondering right about know if those pansy invaders are ever going to fight like a man and try and shoot you. Well, the answer's "no". They must have left their lasers at home, because all they do is fall to their deaths (hence the original title, Kamikaze). Due to the invaders' characteristics, the game has a very different feel than most space shooters like Space Invaders and Galaxian. Strategy and timing is more essential in Astro Invader than a quick trigger figure. In fact, frustrating as it may seem, you'll never even get to shoot the majority of the alien invaders. Most of the time you'll be dodging them as you attempt to take out the descending saucers.

Astro Invader proves to be a tough challenge and very difficult to master. A sure sign of a tough game is a low arcade high score and this has one of the lowest around. Consider yourself a pro if you can last long enough to get the extra base at 10,000 points. Casual gamers can quickly get frustrated with the game's difficulty. The sights and sounds are very reminiscent of the other arcade games of its time and add to the intensity of the game. The increasingly faster beeps and blips correspond to the movement of the aliens and their "splats". Add this to the flashes that fill the screen every time you die and you're sure to raise the old blood pressure in no time fast.

If you're a fan of Space Invaders and want something similar, but with a strategic twist, then get Astro Invader. If you're a fan of the carnival- type skill shooters and want something with an outer space flavor, then get Astro Invader." - Nathan Kozlowski.

The offensive player can move his runner around the bases, stop at first or "try for a double"

A right curve ball? A leftie? Or your special super-speed bat-buster?
Your heart's pumping. The crowd is silent. You pitch, the ball seems to hang in mid-air.
Then he swings and misses! OUT!
The crowd roars. Your ears buzz. You've saved the day!
Realistic baseball action. With full batting and fielding action. It's just like the real thing.
"Baseball for the Arcadia 2001 is a passable rendition of America's favourite pastime. Players control each outfielder individually and can throw the ball to each of the four bases, but the computer controls the infielders. When a ball is hit to an infielder, the batter is automatically out. When a ball is hit into the outfield, the perspective switches to an odd close-up angle of the nearest outfielder, who can run right and left to try and catch the ball. Pitchers can throw fast and slow and curve the ball right and left, providing the potential for some crazy- looking pitches. The baseball players are stick figures, and they make a terrible grating sound when running on or off the field." - Brett Weiss.

Brain Quiz One or two player game
Two controller overlays guide players
3 games in 1
Game 1: "Mindbreaker" - your opponent puts 5 numbers into the computer and you must guess the numbers and the sequence. This is "brain baffling". You can also play against the computer
Game 2: "Maxit" - one or two player. 2 controller overlays supplied to guide players. Try to get the "maximum" score
Play against the computer or against a friend
Game 3: "Hangman" - 2 player - two controller overlays guide players. Your opponent enters a word and you must guess it by process of inserting letters. If you lose, a "hanged effigy" appears. Lots of fun.
Especially for the youngsters just learning to spell
Three mind-blowing, intelligence-testing computer games for one or two players.
MIND BREAKER: Play against each other, or take on the computer. Guess the five-digit number inserted in the computer. Follow the hints and guess the number before a maximum of 19 tries.
MAXIT: You move around a computer grid to pick up the highest numbers possible! But when all the high numbers are taken you're forced to pick up negative numbers - that's when the tables start to turn!
HANGMAN: One player programmes a word into the computer. The other player tries to guess the word. You'll need your thinking cap on!
"Brain Quiz contains three competently programmed games. Mind Breaker has players using clues to guess a secret five-digit number. In Maxit, each gamer moves their cursor around a number grid, trying to select the highest numbers possible in order to outscore their opponent. One player's cursor moves horizontally while the other player's cursor moves vertically, and black numbers are positive while red numbers are negative. In Hangman, players can enter words up to 14 letters in length (compared to just six in the Atari 2600 version) for the other player to guess. When the smiling man gets hung, his grin suddenly turns to a frown and his once upright head suddenly appears on his shoulders, making the game more gruesome than its Atari counterpart." - Brett Weiss.

MIND BREAKER:

toggles one or two players.
to start the game.

In one-player mode, the console chooses the secret number. In two-player mode, the right player chooses the secret number. In either mode, the left player must ascertain the number.
You must guess the five-digit number. This can be any number from 00000-99999; it may have digits repeated (eg. '76752' is valid).
You enter five digits and then press Enter.
'+' indicates the number of digits which are present and in the correct position.
'$' indicates the number of digits which are present but may or may not be in the correct position.
Note that anything which qualifies for the '+' category also qualifies for the '$' category (ie. the number of '+' will never be more than the number of '$'). Also note that you only need to enter a given digit once to be told about all occurrences of that digit. Eg. guessing '47856' for the combination '76752' will yield 1 '+' and 4 '$'. The '+' represents the '5' in the 4th slot. One of the '$' also represents this. Two of the '$' represent the '7' in the 1st and 3rd slots. The last '$' represents the '6' in the 2nd slot.

MAXIT:

Player 1 can move cursor horizontally, player 2 can move cursor vertically. Each player alternates in selecting one number. Black indicates positive numbers (eg. black '3' is '+3'); red indicates negative numbers (eg. red '4' is '-4'). The number you have chosen is added (black) or subtracted (red) from your score. Objective is to score more points than opponent.

Breakaway One or two player game
There are 64 versions possible for this game
There are many ways and speeds to which this game can be played
Play against the computer or try to beat your opponent
In one version you can control the ball even after your paddle has hit it
In another version the ball makes "holes" in the paddle, increasing difficulty of play
A "blackout" option is also there
Scoring on screen for each player
Endless hours of fun for all members of the family
"Breakaway is a Breakout clone, but it's not as good as the arcade or Atari 2600 versions of Breakout because the Arcadia 2001 lacks a rotary controller. Making up for this shortcoming to a small degree is a keypad button that speeds up the paddle. Also, the game includes a special two-player mode that is similar to Pong, but with a wall of bricks behind each player's paddle. The player with the most bricks remaining when the timer runs out wins the game. Other Breakaway options include paddle size, double paddles, invisible bricks, the ability to catch the ball, the ability to aim the ball with the joystick, and more. Unlike the walls in the Atari 2600 version of Breakout, which appear as solid stripes, the bricks in Breakaway are outlined individually." - Brett Weiss.

You can give or take a "time" handicap
This is a game of determination, concentration and skill
Exiting and fun to play
For all the family
Battle the computer or take on a friend.
You'll need immense concentration.
The object is to surround your opponent's men on all 4 sides and take him off the board.
When all the squares are occupied, the player with the most squares on the board wins.
Six different levels of player make the game more exciting as your skills improve.
"A nicely programmed clone of Reversi or Othello, Capture has players taking turns placing black and red game pieces on a green [?], 64-space grid. The objective is to trap the other player's pieces (on all four sides [?]), and several pieces can be trapped at once. When a piece gets trapped, it changes to the colour of the trapping player's pieces. When the board gets full, the player occupying the most spaces wins the game. Games can be timed, and players can give or take a time handicap. There are six different skill levels from which to choose." - Brett Weiss.

Game for 1 player.
Hounded by the Dog Catcher

Cat Trax is the first new Pac-Man type game I have seen since Mattel's Lock 'n' Chase to offer any real development of the basic theme.
In this version you can actually change the shape of the maze as the game is in progress.
A series of gates which can be closed to turn the maze into a single long passage can be opened and shut to trap the dogs that are chasing you around the maze.
You are a cat being pursued around a maze by three dogs. As you travel you eat up the dots which fill the maze until the maze has been cleared.
Every so often a fish will appear at the centre of the maze. If you eat this you will change into a dog collecting van which you drive around the maze in pursuit of the dogs which can now be deposited in the kennel at the top of the maze. But you will have to be quick as you change back into a cat 30 seconds after eating the fish.
The game also features a warp button which enables you to disappear if the dogs are aboutt to catch you and then reappear in a different part of the maze.
It runs on the Hanimex HMG 5000.

- Computer & Video Games magazine, Issue #14, December 1982, p. 24.

"One of the better coin-op clones for the Arcadia 2001, Cat Trax is similar to Mouse Trap, but instead of a mouse running away from cats, players control a cat being chased by three dogs. To turn the tables on the dogs and send them to their doghouse, the cat can eat a fish that appears infrequently in the centre of the screen, transforming the cat into a dog catcher's truck. There are gates to open and close (via the keypad, like Mouse Trap for the ColecoVision), and the cat can eat apples for bonus points. Players are given a limited number of warps for when the cat gets cornered. Cat Trax will never win points for originality, but solid controls, nice graphics, good animation and challenging gameplay make it an essential part of the Arcadia 2001 library." - Brett Weiss.

Doraemon "Although it looks like Route 16 and plays a little like it, it feels much different. The main differences are: mice chase you, your character is a cat. Unlike Route 16, Doraemon gets really slow when one of the mice appears and even slower when the second one appears. But there's an extra. If you collect a ? and press fire, you see the complete labyrinth just like in Route 16 when you leave a room, but a small propeller appears above your head and you can fly to any other room you wish, making the game somewhat easier. You can use this extra 3 times. I'd say that Doraemon feels a bit more relaxed and almost adventure-like than Route 16, which is a much faster game in many aspects (there are also no slow-downs, so it feels much faster)." - Stefan Piasecki.

Dr. Slump "Very novel gameplay. You are a tiny character in a comic-like city. On the top of the screen there's a UFO landing site. Two funky aliens walk around and steal parts of buildings, cars etc. and bring them to the site to create their UFO. You can walk after them and by pressing fire, you shout at them which makes them fall over and, if they carry something, they'll drop it. You can then walk over the item, pick it up and bring it back to its previous location. You are losing energy all the time. Sometimes a guy appears on the right side of the screen and leaves something that looks like a large tea-can - touch the can and you'll recover. If you lose all your energy, the aliens speed up building their UFO and once it is finished, they climb on top of it, the UFO starts and slowly it flies out of the screen." - Stefan Piasecki.

The complete UFO has 5 parts. Missing parts of objects are shown in blue. The area where the gun can be used (while the UFO is airborne) is immediately below the horizon, between the red-roofed house and the launchpad.

You are trapped in a maze and enemy robots are all over!
Shoot them down with your laser gun, but watch out for their counterattack: They are armed too!
Be careful: Walls are electrified.
Game for 1 player.
You're trapped in a maze of electrified walls surrounded by aliens who can attack you from eight different directions.
Then your troubles really begin! A death-dealing, indestructable spinner appears on the screen and it's aiming straight for you! The spinner is capable of penetrating the electric walls and is immune to all bullets. Help! It doesn't look like you've got a chance.
Points are won when you destroy all the aliens or escape the maze. But beware the electrified maze walls...one touch and you'll be frazzled!
Escape is the name of the game in this second new offering from Hanimex this month.
You are trapped in an electronic maze with highly charged walls which, if you touch them, the walls will electrocute you.
The aliens are after you. You must shoot them out of the way before you make a dash for the exit of the maze. There is also a deadly spinning dicky-bow shaped flying saucer which will take off and home in on you at any moment. This cannot be shot by your figure. Arcade veterans will recognise this as a version of the popular video favourite - Beserk [sic].
The games are in the shops now at 16.

- Computer & Video Games magazine, Issue #14, December 1982, p. 24.

"Comparable structurally to Berzerk, Escape has players manoeuvering a man through eight randomly selected mazes, shooting at strange looking aliens (as opposed to Berzerk robots) while avoiding enemies, enemy fire and electrified walls. Unfortunately, the protagonist moves in slow motion, making Berzerk a much more enjoyable game. Also, shots sound like sandpaper scraping on bricks, and the spinner enemy that attacks when players hang around a maze too long pales in comparison to Berzerk's Evil Otto." - Brett Weiss.

Hobo Hobo is a lovable old rogue who wants to reach the other side of Grand Central Railway Station. But first he must cross a multi-lane freeway. 'honk, honk' 'toot, toot'. Those motorists won't slow down for anyone - so keep on your toes.
Next Hobo scales the station wall. But watch out for the security guards waiting to send poor Hobo off to jail!
Once over the wall Hobo does a spot of train-hopping. This requires real skill. Hobo must jump on top of one train, then on to another moving in the opposite direction. Watch out for the purple trains, they pass under tunnels and knock Hobo off!

Jump Bug Jump Bug's odyssey begins in a city full of monsters. Avoid their deadly touch and flee to the land of volcanoes. Here, molten lava erupts from the craters without warning. Even the cloud of ash around the crater mouth is deadly. Jump Bug must de-toxify it and grab the money bags from extinct underground craters.
Then it's on to the ancient pyramid. Beware the thousand-year-old mummies rising from their sleep to destroy you. Escape the tomb on a water fountain, then hold your breath for a full-on undersea battle with three giant squid.
The next scene takes you to outer space. Battle the flying saucers and deadly space flies. If Jump Bug collides with them he'll be zapped!
Version "A" of Jump Bug allows you to change levels using the left (ie. non-playing) player's '0' key.

Jungler "Jungler is based upon an arcade game of the same name designed by Konami in 1981. Gameplay revolves around survival of the fittest among giant worms that reside underground. Each level is comprised of a single screen maze with a large open vertical area in the center as well as dead ends and hazardous worm traps. Up to two players can take turns playing as the white worm that starts out in the center of the maze. When the game begins two enemy worms will head into the maze from the outermost corners. Movement is similar to Pac-Man in that your worm will travel in the direction you press until you run into a wall. Pressing another available direction will allow your worm to continue until it once again becomes obstructed by a boundary. Each segment of a worm will follow suit behind the head, which gives the game a bit of a Centipede appearance.

Both the player and enemy worms can shoot in the direction the head of the worm is facing. This is where survival of the fittest comes in. Each time a shot makes contact with the rear segment of a worm, the segment is destroyed and the worm is reduced in length. Enemy worms that are equal or greater in length than the player worm will be red. Enemy worms that are one segment shorter than the player worm will be yellow. Finally enemy worms that are two or more segments shorter than the player worm will be green. The length of each worm is important because that's what decides who lives or dies. If the head section of the player worm and the head section of an enemy worm run into one another, the shorter worm will be completely destroyed. So the trick to quickly eliminating enemy worms is to shoot away a couple of their tail segments and then run into them head on. However the player worm can be shot down shorter by the enemy worms as well, which is why the color coding is extremely helpful. Once an entire wave of enemy worms is destroyed the next level begins.

There are a couple of exceptions to the basic rules, however. From time to time strawberries will appear at specific locations in the maze. Eating a strawberry will add one segment to your worm. An advantage can be gained by having a standard full length worm eat a strawberry and gain one extra segment. This now larger than average player worm will be longer than the fresh enemy worms, which will enter the maze already yellow. Using this technique, a seasoned player can quickly barrel through a wave of enemy worms and rack up a big score. Speaking of big scores, if points are what you're going for then you may want to destroy enemy worms with shots alone. Once an enemy worm is shot all the way down to its last segment, the head, destroying the head will yield the player 500 bonus points. Occasionally an enemy worm will get itself stuck against a worm trap, which will eventually destroy the worm. This is an excellent opportunity to come up behind the trapped worm, shoot it down to nothing and pick up an easy bonus." - David Lundin.

"This oddly titled game is a port of Konami's 1981 coin-op curiosity. Players guide a snake-like dragon through nine different mazes, shooting the segmented tail of an enemy dragon (or pair of dragons, depending on the difficulty level). When the enemy dragon's tail gets shorter than the good dragon's tail, the player should force a head-on collision, effectively removing the enemy dragon from the screen. Regenerative segments, which can be eaten to restore a partially depleted dragon, appear randomly at the top of the playfield. The original arcade version of Jungler boasts three onscreen enemies and is more challenging, but this is nevertheless a finely programmed conversion. The dragon heads look like spaceships, but they do resemble their arcade counterparts fairly closely." - Brett Weiss.

To fire, you must also hold the paddle in the desired direction.

You should avoid killing snakes when you are in the top left corner, as they are spawned there.

Differences between the coin-op and the conversion:
1. In the coin-op, firing does not require a direction. In the conversion, you must give a direction when firing.
2. In the coin-op, the tail segment has special imagery. In the conversion, it uses the same imagery as the torso.
3. In the coin-op, the torso only animates while you are moving. In the conversion, it animates constantly.
4. In the coin-op, you can shoot a head-only snake (ie. one with neither torso nor tail) to kill it. In the conversion, this is not possible (as there are no head-only snakes).
5. In the conversion, when you hit eg. a wall, your torso and tail "collapse" temporarily into your head. In the coin-op, this doesn't happen.
6. In the coin-op, head-head collisions with a snake of equal length will kill the enemy snake. In the conversion, such collisions will kill you. In both versions, head-head collisions between snakes of unequal length will kill the shorter snake.
7. In the coin-op, long enemy snakes have red torsos and tails. In the conversion, long enemy snakes have black torsos and tails.
8. In the coin-op, equal-length enemy snakes have yellow torsos and tails. In the conversion, they have black torsos and tails.
9. In the coin-op, short enemy snakes have green torsos and tails. In the conversion, they have yellow torsos and tails.
10. In the coin-op, bullets pass through the heads and torsos of snakes. In the conversion, they do not (and thus you must get "behind" an enemy snake to attack it). In both versions, the torsos of snakes are invulnerable. Only the final (tail) section is vulnerable.
11. In the coin-op, "head-only" snakes can exist. In the conversion, all snakes always have at least one tail segment.
12. In the coin-op, you can have two bullets in the air simultaneously. In the conversion, you can only have one.
13. In the coin-op, there are three enemy snakes. In the conversion, there are only one or two.
14. In the coin-op, there are "barriers" (X inside O) which block snake movement and eventually kill enemy snakes. In the conversion, these do not exist.
Colours mentioned above are for games 1, 5 and 9. Other games use other colour schemes.

Missile War One player game (uses left side controller)
One controller overlay guides play
The enemy is descending on your city. You can launch missiles from the east or west to destroy the enemy
You must be quick to locate enemy and launch your defensive missiles
After missiles have been fired and enemy have attacked, your score will appear on the screen
High score remains on screen so next player can challenge
Great sound effects and colour
Tests your reflexes and skill
Fun for all the family
An attack warning alarm sounds...enemy missiles are on the way!
Don't waste a second. It's up to you to single-handedly save 4 cities from death and destruction.
You have 2 missile launchers at your fingertips, each loaded with 10 missiles. Don't waste them. If they run out before you get a chance to restock, you're as good as dead. (Gulp!)
If at least one city is still standing after the first attack, you'll get 10 new missiles for each launcher. But beware. The next attack will be faster. The next faster still...and if you're still around after that you'll need bionic reflexes to save you!
"A poor man's take on Missile Command, Missile War has players guiding a sluggish laser targeting marker around a white playfield, firing missiles from two ground-based launching sites. When a missing reaches its target location in the sky, it will emit a pitiful little explosion, which is intended to take out enemy missiles coming down from above. The reason to destroy enemy missiles is to protect cities (as well as launching sites) that are positioned on the surface of the planet. The Atari 2600 version of Missile Command has just one launching site while the original arcade classic has three, putting Missile War squarely in the middle. Even so, the 2600 port is better by far than the Arcadia clone. For a truly superior console game of this type, gamers should stick with the Atari 5200 version of Missile Command." - Brett Weiss.

Great sounds and colour
Fun for all the family
"Somewhat similar to (but not as good as) Sea Battle for the Intellivision, Ocean Battle has each player deploying a fleet consisting of blocky looking cruisers, destroyers and submarines. Each vessel is ranked according to firing range, endurance and other factors. The formation of the ships determines the battle conditions, and players must decide which ship to engage in each battle. The ocean is light blue, and the generic land masses are green. When a battle begins, the action switches to a second, more simplistic screen (sans land masses)." - Brett Weiss.

"A solid port of the 1981 Tekhan arcade game (which was licensed to Kaneko in 1982), Red Clash lets players move their rocket in four directions, but the action scrolls vertically, and shots go straight up the screen. Gamers fire at flying saucers, aliens and other enemies (some of which approach from behind) while cruising through colourful canyons and starry outer space. The arcade version had a two-player alternating mode and a wider, more detailed rocket, but this version does boast some nice features, including pause, a demo mode, and a high score that remains onscreen." - Brett Weiss.
Route 16 The roar of revving engines numbs your senses as you wait nervously for the starter's flag. Your gloved hands grip the wheel. And beneath your heavy black racing helmet, beads of perspiration form on your forehead.
Then your off! Foot flat to the floor, your hurtle down the track... with the three hottest drivers on the circuit coming right after you.
This is no ordinary race. Along the way there are prizes to be collected. To win the laurels, you must collect all the prizes without colliding with the pursuing cars or coming into contact with the deadly skull and crossbones.

Soccer Two player game (uses both controllers)
Two controller overlays guide players
Each goalie can be moved any place on his half of the field
All other players can move laterally, left or right
Fun events: If the goalie fouls a player, the referee will run out and give him a "yellow card" and a free kick is given. A second scene appears for the free kick. If the goalie gets knocked down, stretcher bearers come out to take him off the field and a new goalie comes out.
Game of skill for two players
Fun for all the family
An expectant hush settles over the crowd as the players take their positions on the field. A whistle blows. Kick-off!!
Your player takes the ball well...he's moving down the field fast. Suddenly, his path is blocked. He passes to the Centre Forward. The goal is within striking distance now. He side-steps the last defender and shoots...
The ball rockets past the goalie! The crowd roars. You've scored in the opening minute!
Realistic World Cup action. Players kick, block, pass and shoot for goal. All the skills and thrills of a real match. With injury time, penalty shots and realistic crowd sound effects.
"This odd-looking game features an overhead view of the playfield, which is comprised of 22 tiny players and a goal apiece on the right and left sides of the screen. Goalies are given free range of movement (on their side of the field), but the other players are restricted to vertical movement, making the game somewhat similar to football. If a goalie fouls an opponent, the opposing team gets a free kick. If the goalie gets knocked down, he's hauled off on a stretcher, and another goalie takes his place. As with most early Intellivision sports titles, Soccer and [most] other Arcadia 2001 sports games are two-player only." - Brett Weiss.

Space Attack One player game (uses right side controller)
Try your evasive action skill to stop the space craft rocketing down to destroy you
You have three missile launchers to "wipe" them out
Different skill levels
See the space craft "peel off" and zero onto your missile launcher
Also you must avoid a "rain" of rockets
Be hurry to destroy all enemy space craft in each armada as you will be running out of fuel, watch the fuel gauge
Destroy all the space craft and another faster armada appears
A bonus missile launcher to be granted for scoring reaches 5000 points
Great action - colour - sound effects
Highest score remains on screen so next player can challenge
Fun for all the family
The sky is thick with death-dealing aliens as they jostle for the privilege of blasting you into tiny specks of space dust.
With ear-shattering explosions, their rockets send your senses reeling. You want to scream. But you know you must stay alert and ready to retaliate! You depress the fire-button and with a stunning display of space-zapping skill, you blast the enemy ships into oblivion.
You relax. Draw a deep breath. Wipe the sweat from your brow...
But watch out! Here comes a new squadron of enemy space ships and this time they're really out to get ya!
This mindless Galaxian clone introduces a fuel gauge to the formula, and the manual says to quit shooting when the gauge nears empty. However, this doesn't seem to do any good since the gauge continues to decrease even if the player stops moving and firing. The only way to refuel is to clear a wave, but once the gauge reaches empty, the ship will explode. The most interesting strategic element of Galaxian, that of shooting escort ships prior to destroying their accompanying flagship, is missing. Further, the enemies lack animation, even when diving. Space Attack is definitely a challenge (the fuel gauge forces players to act fast), but it's derivative and flawed." - Brett Weiss.

Space Mission One player game (uses left side controller)
Object is to assemble a spaceship in space
You are the pilot in the cockpit and your ship is trying to assemble 4 pieces of a spaceship
You are racing against time - you have two minutes to complete the mission
You are avoiding deadly rockets from enemy
You can call for another scene to tell you where you are in time and space
If you get "hit" you must re-launch
Excellent sound effects and colour
This is a test of skill vs. time
Fun for the "astronauts"
"The player's mission in Space Mission is to rebuild a four-piece space station within about two minutes. This is done by launching a "droneship", guiding it towards each piece of the station, loading each piece onto the ship, and placing the pieces in a specified pattern. Naturally, alien spaceships will attack. To ward off these pests, players must switch control to a "commandship", which can destroy the aliens with laser missiles. This is yet another classic videogame that contains spaceships that look like TIE Fighters, but the space station element does add an unusual twist to the first-person shooter genre." - Brett Weiss.

You're under attack by enemy flying saucers, energy bombs, missiles and deadly mutants.
Four of your spacefighters have already been blasted into outer space and the energy meter on your only remaining craft is falling fast!
10...9...8...Just a few precious seconds remain to paralyse the missile-protected energy station and re-energise your spacefighter.
Will you reach it in time?
Will you be hit by the enemy?
Or will you recover to wipe out another invastion of flying saucers before mum calls you for dinner?
You are controlling the Earth's SPACE RAIDER and your mission is to destroy as many alien mutants and fighters as you can with your lasers, to protect the planet and...to score points!
Game for 1 player.
"This side-scroller is somewhat similar to Defender in that players fly left and right, shooting long lasers at mutants, flying saucers and other enemies. However, it's far less intense, there're no humans to rescue, there's no hyperspace, and the enemies only move in horizontal lines. The game does dd bombs, which should should be dropped on the missile launchers found on ground-based energy stations. Paralyzing both missile launchers enables players to fly down and re-energize their ship, which has an energy timer that causes the ship to explode when the timer reaches zero. Unfortunately, there are no other ground-based targets. Space Raiders will appeal to Nova Blast fans, but that's only marginal praise." - Brett Weiss.

Who's Not a Pretty Boy Then!

Space Vultures are a vicious breed of birdlike aliens who can fly through space without the aid of space ships. They will attack any old planet that takes their fancy on their strange intergalactic migration.
Nobody seems to know where they are going, or for what purpose, but then it does not really matter to you - the lone pilot of the sole remaining planetary Defender Ship.
Your duty is clear. Shoot down the aliens before they shoot you and colonise your planet for their evil birdlike overlords.
The vultures attack in groups of three, hovering around the screen and then homing in on your space ship.
Your are armed with an energy shield which will protect you for a few seconds, enabling you to survive a head-on collision with the aliens and shrug off their laser fire.
If you survive the first wave of Vultures you are then challenged by the super birds who are several times the size of their predecessors and who attack in waves of three.
These superior adversaries take more than one direct hit to finish off. They swoop down straight towards your ship bombarding you with missiles. You will need to shoot fast and accurately to down them before they down you.
One drawback that Defender Ship pilots have to come to terms with is the slowness of the ship's missiles. They jerk very awkwardly skywards.
Despite this the Vultures are still pretty easy to deal with. This particular Defender Ship pilot managed to shoot down wave after wave of them on his second go.
Space Vultures is the latest game for the new Hanimex HMG 2650. The game is available from Hanimex stockists at approximately 20.

- Computer & Video Games magazine, Issue #15, January 1983, p. 28.

"Space Vultures is similar to Phoenix, but less challenging and lacking the enemy mothership. Players move a defender ship around the bottom portion of the screen, firing upwards at vultures and giant birds, the latter of which attack in waves of three and turn into small hawks when their wings are shot. As in Phoenix, the player's ship is equipped with shields that grant temporary invincibility. The enemies are easy to shoot down, despite the fact that the player's missiles move slowly." - Brett Weiss.

Spiders If you're scared of creepie-crawlies, this game will really have you reaching for the insect spray. These Space-spiders are mean. They arrive on your screen in red cocoons, then the horrible things start dropping from the sky.
If a spider scores a direct hit, your rocketship will explode. If it lands, it helps build up a web - until your ship is surrounded and you're devoured as a tasty space-snack!
By the last scene you'll be fighting off 23 red cocoons, 8 deadly spiders, white cocoon missiles and red lasers that fire every two seconds. If that's your idea of fun we suggest you see a doctor!
"A nice port of the 1981 Sigma arcade game, Spiders has players guiding a rocket back and forth along the bottom of the screen, firing upwards at spiders and their webs and cocoons. As the webbing grows, new cocoons form, and a spider appears in place of each cocoon after that cocoon has been shot. Cocoons fall randomly in an attempt to destroy the player's rocket, and red lasers, which appear from seemingly nowhere, must be dealt with as well. Obviously, spiders must be prevented from hitting the rocket, but they should also be kept from reaching the bottom of the screen. Eight levels of difficulty are available, with the hardest level pitting players against a minimum of eight spiders and 23 cocoons (in addition to the cocoon missiles and red lasers). The graphics in this rendition of Spiders are bulkier and blockier than in the arcade version, but the game still looks pretty darned good." - Brett Weiss.

Hours of fun for all the family
It's the final of the inter-galactic chess championships. As the representative for planet Earth, you're pitted against the best chess strategists in the universe!
A game of fun and strategy for two players based on the well-known game of chess, but your chessmen are space ships engaged in an inter- galactic war.
Instead of capturing pieces as in chess, you weaken or destroy your opponent's craft by firing missiles at them.
To win the game you must capture or destroy your opponent's commander.
"This early battle chess cartridge has an outer space setting. The black and white chequered board looks traditional, but the game pieces are oddly shaped spaceships. Instead of simply capturing the opponent's pieces, player must fire missiles to weaken and destroy them. Obviously, the rules stray from standard chess (castling is not allowed, for example), but the game offers an intriguing mix of strategy and action. Interestingly, Star Chess predates Archon, the popular computer battle chess game." - Brett Weiss.

"Despite the regrettable lack of a two-player mode, Tanks a Lot (not to be confused with Tanks but No Tanks for the Atari 2600) is one of the better games in the Arcadia 2001 library. Players guide a Bazooka Man around a maze (which consists of brick walls and an outer edge), shooting tanks and avoiding tank fire. The objective, in addition to destroying the enemy tanks, is to protect a commanding base vehicle, which is inoperable, but can be warped to different areas of the maze. Players can also warp the Bazooka Man and open and close maze gates, making for some fun run-and-gun strategies." - Brett Weiss.

Scoring is as follows:

20 points per baby rescued.
100 points + (level number * 100) for completing each level. (Eg. 200 points for level 1, 300 points for level 2, etc.)

Differences between the coin-op and the conversion:

1. In coin-op, each baby must be delivered to the house before rescuing the next baby. In conversion, babies need not be delivered anywhere.
2. In coin-op, only one bomb may be onscreen at a time. In conversion, unlimited bombs may be onscreen at a time.
3. In coin-op, each game starts with 3 bombs. In conversion, each turtle starts with 14 bombs.
4. In coin-op, there is a "bomb" power-up, worth 3 bombs. In conversion, this power-up never appears.
5. In coin-op, your laid bombs disappear when you die. In conversion, your laid bombs stay onscreen when you die.
6. In coin-op, you immediately complete the level when you rescue all the babies. In conversion, you must first exit the level through the gap in the wall.
7. In coin-op, there are 3 starting trucks (+ 2 hidden trucks + 6 hidden babies). In conversion, there is 1 starting truck (+ 2 hidden trucks + 6 hidden babies)..

Emulator Compatibility Non-Issues

Here is a list of game behaviours which resemble emulator incompatibilities but which in fact also occur on a genuine Australian PAL Emerson Arcadia 2001.

3D Attack Commando jets which are very close to the ground are drawn behind their own shadows (therefore you will only see the shadow).
3D Soccer
Baseball
"Selected" players are not positioned correctly, compared to their "unselected" positions.
Alien Invaders "Rows of aliens don't move like other Space Invaders; they sort of follow you to whatever side of the screen you are on, and the bottom row sort of get stuck. The whole thing was more like spaceys on LSD to me. After being shot it let me move completely off screen to the left and random missiles appear halfway down the screen from nowhere if you don't move out into the game area. When aliens move down a row the bottom row become stuck and move out of sync with the top rows. When you shoot the mothership [UFO] it appears on the far right of the screen for a couple of frames after explosion before beginning from left to right as normal. Often rows of aliens become out of sync by one pixel when following you left or right making it extremely hard to hit the mothership. Missiles can sometimes be seen at the far bottom of the screen for one frame. After shooting bases you cannot fire until the missile would have reached the top of the screen. Intermittently the missile on your spacecraft can be misaligned by one pixel. When aliens shoot bases the wrong blocks are removed and the same when the player shoots them. After being shot you can position yourself far left off screen; then aliens will freeze in their positions without any animation until you reappear by moving right." - Gavin Turner. The game penalizes (with a delay before the next bullet is ready to be fired) the player if the firebutton is down at the moment when the player's existing bullet is destroyed. Game time elapses faster than real time. On a real PAL machine, approximately 1.56' seconds of game time elapses per second of real time, or 0.638297872 seconds of real time elapses per second of game time (94 seconds of game time per 60 seconds of real time). Thus, total game time of 5 minutes is about 3 minutes and 11.4893617 seconds of real time (for PAL; it is less on an NTSC machine).
American Football This has background crowd noise during play. (There is a patch available from Amigan Software which silences the crowd.)
Astro Invader Explosions of shot enemies are centred on the bullet, not the enemy.
Astro Invader
The End
These have bullets on the ship.
Baseball The ball is not visible while it is held by a player.
Brain Quiz In Maxit, the "cursor" is positioned slightly to the lower right compared to the positioning of the solid green squares.
Breakaway The ball only bounces off bricks when it is moving up, not down. Similarly, the ball does not bounce off the back of the bat(s). The paddle cannot quite touch the walls.
Circus The background may be green or black, depending on the relative speeds of the CPU and UVI of the machine.
Combat While pushing against an obstacle, your tank can "vibrate" (alternate rapidly between two positions).
Crazy Gobbler
Escape
Nibblemen/Devilman/Super Gobbler
Robot Killer
These invert the screen colours temporarily at the end of each level.
Doraemon
Route 16
There is a blank column in the question mark symbol.
Dr. Slump The sky flashes for an instant when the two enemies appear. Some available videos show different colours (eg. green ground instead of yellow), for some reason.
Escape The walls of the maze are, unlike in Robot Killer , not evenly dithered.
Escape
Robot Killer
When you die, you can restart on a different level.
Frogger This game was developed and tested on an emulator (only). On the real machine, there are 3 issues compared to how I intended the game to be: (a) jerky scrolling instead of smooth; (b) black water; (c) flickering blue area at bottom. But it is still playable. There is a video here.
Funky Fish It is possible to lose lives for no apparent reason (can happen eg. just after losing a life, or at the start of a level). After the game has been paused for about 4 minutes, it goes into the demo mode. Presumably this was coded deliberately but it is not documented in the manual and thus could be considered a bug.
Golf At the end of the game, you cannot a new game; you can only . Also, there is a red flash when starting the game.
Grand Slam Tennis Player 1 (yellow player) always turns left before moving (especially noticeable when moving right). The letter O is used instead of the number 0. The players always appear "in front of" the net even when standing behind it. On Ami/WinArcadia 28.8, player 2 (cyan player) is not fully drawn when he is standing near the top of the screen. On a real (PAL) machine, this issue does not occur.
Hobo On level 2, white pixels can become yellow momentarily while the player is jumping. (There is a patch available from Amigan Software which stops this from happening.)
On level 2, you can jump in the diagonal corridors, but can't walk downwards in the vertical corridors. After jumping, you are not able to jump again for about a second.
Hobo
Jump Bug
The End
Turtles/Turpin
These colour the area at the bottom of the display.
Jump Bug
Spiders
These cycle the colours on the title screen.
Jump Bug The player "falls through" clouds somewhat before bouncing.
Mobile Soldier Gundam Enemy explosions look bad. Some available videos show different colours (eg. blue sky instead of green), for some reason.
Monaco Grand Prix The cars begin with negative velocity.
Nibblemen After losing a man, the score etc. will momentarily be visible at the bottom of the screen.
Ocean Battle The ships can change their horizontal position at the conclusion of the combat screen.
Pleiades You cannot be harmed by enemy bullets until you have fired at least once (per man).
Red Clash This has noise on the title screen.
Route 16 The "corridors" are 2 "positions" wide but are drawn as only being 1 "position" wide; thus, you can appear to be in/on a wall but actually be in the corridor. The sprite for "30" (points) has a malformed zero.
Space Raiders
Space Squadron
These invert the screen colours at game over, until the start of a new game. Your bullets have no effect at very short range. Your bullets have no effect when you are dead.
Space Attack Your ship starts offscreen and must be moved left or right until it appears. The ship can come from off screen from the left but appears suddenly and fully in view when starting from the right. Movement of diving enemies is slightly jerky. SpaceAttack-B player movement is faster than on SpaceAttack-A. "It sometimes takes many shots to kill a diving enemy...mostly due to shooting them right as they shoot a bullet before you can even see them release it. Sometimes hits to the enemy ships while they're in formation don't register. I have also seen my bullets kill more than 1 alien with 1 shot. If only one enemy ship is left on the screen and you die, then you still complete the level. Every time there is only one enemy left on-screen, that everything slows down to about half speed, and the input from the controller get a bit unpredictable. It only happens when the enemy ship is over the starfield. If the ship makes its way to the bottom, and then reappears at the top, then everything returns to normal speed - until the enemy reaches the starfield area again."
Space Mission Some sprites and UDCs are solid when in the top 20% of the screen but flicker when in the bottom 80% of the screen. (Perhaps this doesn't happen on an NTSC machine.) There is a constant tone on the title screen. There is constant background noise during play.
Space Vultures When you lose a life, your replacement ship starts to the left of the visible screen. The wings of the mother hawks flicker when they flap. The player's ship graphics can become corrupted during play.
Spiders "When you are hit and you ship explodes the smoke sprites don't disappear when they reach the edge of the screen; instead they "slide" along it. Sound sounds like its going beserk but this is real! High notes shrieking all over the place." The screen flashes (colours invert briefly) when you lose a life.

Up to 2 things can be destroyed per shot. Incompletely formed web segments cannot be destroyed.

Star Chess The title screen scrolls horizontally and makes noises. (There is a patch available from Amigan Software which stops this from happening.)
Super Bug Blank spaces and/or hexadecimal digits may appear in the score area (eg. your score can be "2A100").
Super Dimension Fortress Macross In and after the 2nd room, the very bottommost part of the screen is corrupt (perhaps not visible on all TVs). You cannot move diagonally. Bullets may emerge from other parts of your ship than the centre.
Tanks a Lot When shooting walls, the top half of the block is always removed, no matter which side you shot it from.
The End The 'D' of 'END' is horizontally reversed.

Sometimes there is corruption of the player's ship image at game over. (There is a patch available from Amigan Software which stops this from happening.)

Turtles/Turpin While the button is held, the topmost turtle on the screen becomes a car.
Various Many games have flickering sprites - this is due to the technique of sprite multiplexing.

Many games have twinkling starfields.
